The Social Issue Of Poverty - 2200 Words

The social issue that I chose for my action paper is Poverty. Poverty is an issue that interests me not only because it affects so many people in the world every single day, but also because as a member of the lower class it affects me as well. Poverty is defined as being â€Å"the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support† (CAPAI). Poverty is one of the biggest issues in the world, affecting billions of people every day. It became a social problem many, many years ago, dating back to before the 1800’s. It is now 2014 and we are still in the midst of a poverty crisis. What appalls me the most is that the United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world yet we still have the widest gap between the rich and the poor, with the middle class slowly disappearing (Eitzen, 208). This shows that this is a much bigger issue than it is being treated as and it needs a lot more attention than it is receiving. 1 in every 3 people in the world live in poverty every day (OXFAM). This number seems to be rapidly increasing as the years go on. But in order to put a stop to this problem we need to first be aware of the causes so that we can find the solutions. Many people in the United States believe that poverty is a self-imposed problem, meaning that it comes from personal influences more than outside factors (Eitzen, 194). If this were true, which it is not, putting an end to poverty would be a lot simpler.
